About Me:

I was raised in Bundang, South Korea, and currently reside in Toronto, Canada. I hold a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) and a Master of Music (M.M.) in Violin Performance from The Juilliard School, and I recently earned my Doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University in 2023. My academic research focuses on subjectivity in music, the experiences of the Asian diaspora within music education, and intersections of music and educational policies across North America.

Teaching:

I teach because I’m an optimist at heart. But the unprecedented challenges of recent years—global crises, social upheaval, and deepening divides—have shown me that optimism alone isn’t always enough. In our current world grappling with inequality, polarization, and rapid change, building greater empathy and equity across communities requires ongoing, often difficult conversations that acknowledge others’ realities that differ from our own. Teaching and learning music doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it’s deeply tied to the world we live in. I’m committed to equipping students not only with technical skills but also with the mindfulness and courage to engage more openly, empathetically, and critically with the world—and the music—around them.

Hobbies:

I will try any workout at least once—whether it’s barre, kickboxing, rowing, spinning, trampoline HIIT, pilates, puppy yoga, Barry’s Bootcamp, Orange Theory, F45, you name it. If it gets my heart rate up, I’m in. When I’m not trying out new workouts, you can find me binge-watching scary movies with my husband, whipping up Korean and Japanese dishes in the kitchen, and saying hi to every dog in the neighborhood. I’m also on a never-ending quest to find the best omakase spots wherever I go and to figure out how to keep my wilting plants alive.
