About Me:
I’m from Bundang, South Korea, and now reside in Toronto, Canada. I hold a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) and a Master of Music (M.M.) in Violin Performance from Juilliard and my Doctorate from Columbia University. My academic research investigates how subjectivity influences music (e.g., through genre “hierarchies,” performance practices, and how university music majors are perceived by non-music majors). I also explore the impact of Asian diasporic identity on music pedagogy, and examine policy-driven strategies to enhance equity in music education in North America.
Teaching:
My goal as a teacher is to inspire and equip students with not only the technical skills and musical proficiency, but also the discipline, mindfulness, and artistic integrity that enrich both their musical journey and their lives beyond the stage. Music has always held a unique power to provide solace and expression when words fail, and as musicians, we carry the responsibility to keep that lifeline alive, especially in challenging times. Teaching requires optimism (always!), and I strive to help students discover that connection, resilience, and joy through the art we create and share together through violin playing.
Hobbies:
I like trying different types of workouts—barre, kickboxing, rowing, spinning, trampoline HIIT, pilates, puppy yoga, Barry’s Bootcamp, Orange Theory, F45, you name it. If it gets my heart rate up, I’m in. When I’m not trying out new workouts, you’ll find me binge-watching scary movies with my husband, K-dramas, whipping up Korean and Japanese dishes in the kitchen, and saying hello to every dog in the neighborhood. I’m also on a never-ending quest to find the best omakase spots and keep my many wilting plants alive.
